It’s finally upon us, the holiday season! For the glorious month of December, in the run up to Christmas and New Year, work takes a bit of a back seat as hair is let down, glitter adorns our dresses and every bare wall is decked with tinsel.
However, amidst the general merriment, it’s important to remember that December is a marathon not a sprint. Being properly prepped and primed will separate the women from the girls, but with a few party time recovery tips, you’ll have the most beautiful festive glow in selfies, Facebook photos and Instagram shots (even without a filter!)
Drinking alcohol may undoubtedly loosen your inhibitions, making you text people you wish you hadn’t, but it will also make you dehydrated. The first effect may leave you slightly embarrassed in the morning, but the latter can affect the health of your skin. Alcohol is a toxin, so your liver will be overworking, trying to compensate for the extra glasses of wine and fizz you enjoyed at the Christmas party last night. The resulting dehydration can cause your skin to look dry and puffy.
At Elenique Aesthetics we are in favour of drinking more water and this is never truer than after a night of festive drinking! Because alcohol is so dehydrating, drinking plenty of water after a night out will help you feel better quicker (especially important if you are trying to survive a day of work.) Even if you don’t drink too much, late nights can leave you feeling and looking tired. But what can you do to combat the tired, puffy and lacklustre look of your post-party skin?
An easy way to help alleviate the problem is by using hyaluronic acid serum; it helps retain moisture and makes the skin look plumper. Applying skin care products with hyaluronic acid will hydrate and give you that boost needed to enjoy the rest of the Christmas celebrations looking your best. For those who are really suffering, our trained aestheticians offer a fantastic hydrating facial that will help revitalise tired skin and is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types.
While alcohol will draw moisture away from your skin, on the average night out your body may also absorb smoke and toxic air which can affect your eyes, making them feel dry and irritable. Given the amount of sleep the average party goer gets, this will make a bad situation feel considerably worse! Unfortunately this is particularly true during wintertime, as the cold air makes the skin around your eyes even drier.
Always remember to take your eye make-up off, however tempting it is to collapse into bed, as your eyes will thank you in the morning. We also advise taking a damp muslin cloth and using it as a cold compress to help soothe your eyes and calm any irritation. Here at Elenique Aesthetics, we cannot overstate the importance of moisturising your eye area with an eye cream. Apply a pea sized amount with a finger spreading a thin, even coat over your eye area before beginning your make-up and again before bed. This will smooth lines and help you look as though you’ve had a full eight hours sleep, even when you haven’t!
Be sure to take care of your skin during the festive season and you’ll not only notice that your party recovery is much faster, but you’ll be able to enjoy a gorgeous healthy glow well into the New Year. If you need a helping hand to ensure your skin looks its best, we’re always happy to advise on the most beneficial treatments and facials.
Wishing all our customers a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year – we hope you enjoy the festive cheer!
